It's been over 11 years since I've published a post on blogger. Eleven years and several lifetimes.
Since we last met, the list of "what I've been up to" has been exhaustive:
- left my marriage
- officially inked the divorce 10 years later (a post for another time)
- moved to the beach (and then 10+ more times)
- ultimately deciding to move to San Francisco 3 years ago, where I currently reside
- lived a dreamy beach life, as I always wanted
- had a whole ass career in retail management
- crossed off a bunch of goals, and then some
- had a few toxic relationships
- also had a gorgeous "hoe era"
- made, ended, and reformed crucial friendships
- lost friendships I never thought I'd lose
- quit drinking all together
- had two abortions
- lived through a global pandemic
- parents diagnosed with cancer (currently in remission)
- loved ones dying
- lost hobbies, formed new ones, then lost those, too
- switched careers completely
You know, living a full life.
When I moved to SF three years ago this October, I had this whole notion I would pick blogging back up. I had missed writing publicly, the community we had created in the early days of blogging before sharing your life on the internet became the norm. I remember going to my first blogger meetup back in 2009 and thinking, "wow, I'm really meeting strangers from the internet" like it was some taboo, secret society.
And, oh! Weren't we?
Women looking for answers in each other. What those answers were I still don't know. Maybe it was always about connection: to say, "I see you! I'm doing this and you are too and that means something because we are doing it alongside each other." There's something so freeing about writing here in this space versus my failed attempt at writing on Medium (no tea, no shade!). "Failed" because I gave up- it felt like too much pressure over there to write "articles" and have an academic "opinion", or even Substack which, sheesh. I don't know that I even have an opinion on that platform. Point is: I like it here. And I like me here. So maybe I might stay here for a bit? And have a smashing good time while doing it...
